About Barbara's Services

It is the counsellor or therapist’s role to remain neutral and curious about the experiences of the client or clients, and to help work towards change.

Sessions may be offered to individuals, couples or family groups.

When working with children, it is Barbara’s preference to involve their parents or primary carers, though there are times when it may be appropriate to work with a child individually. This is negotiated with the person making the referral and the guardian of the child.

A central idea of family therapy is that problematic behaviours are generated in relationship, maintained in relationship, and therefore the possibility of resolution in relationship exists.

Family therapy provides unique opportunities to explore the different perspectives of family members on the issues that bring people into counselling. Even when there are family members unable to attend sessions it is possible to hold them in mind.

People come to counselling at different ages and stages in their lives, and Barbara is able to discuss your needs with you to help you make your decision about proceeding with session appointments.

The reasons that bring people to counselling are varied, and Barbara’s skills are suited, but not limited, to the following:

  • Depressive symptoms – low mood, sadness, poor motivation, concentration difficulties, sleep disturbance
  • Anxiety – worry that interferes with day to day functioning
  • Stress – when it all seems too much
  • Relationship difficulties, including intimacy issues
  • Traumatic events – both from the past or the present, one off events or cumulative experiences that lead to experiences of being overwhelmed
  • Fatigue – impacting on functioning
  • Parenting – it can be difficult to maintain perspective when highly stressed and distressed
  • Adjustment difficulties – accidents, re-location, life cycle
  • Grief and loss

Supervision of others working in the counselling and therapy field is available.

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a psychotherapy approach where problems/issues are viewed as based in unprocessed physiologically stored memories impacting present thoughts, emotions, and behaviours. EMDR is used to process unresolved memories.
